ABOUT TREFADDER

Carbon capture through Nordic climate forests

Trefadder develops nature-based climate solutions across the Nordic region. Founded in 2019, it established Norway’s first commercial climate forest and now leads in biological carbon capture, delivering certified CO₂ removal and carbon credits while advancing forest protection, restoration, and biodiversity.

HISTORY

Our journey

Trefadder was founded by entrepreneur Anders Kristiansen with a clear ambition: to accelerate the transition to a greener economy while creating jobs in rural communities.

The first tree

Trefadder officially launches alongside the Norwegian Minister of Finance, and on July 4th 2019, Trefadder plants the very first tree, with the goal of planting one million.

Landowner model

Trefadder launches its landowner model in collaboration with the Norwegian Minister of Agriculture. In collaboration with landowners, long-term land access is formalized to establish climate forests, supporting local livelihoods.

Winner of the ITSA Growth Program

Trefadder gains strong recognition by winning the ITSA Growth final, securing substantial funding from several well-known investors.

Winner of the Fauna Program

Trefadder was selected for the highly regarded “Fauna Eksperimentet”. After six months of coaching and mentorship, the company went on to win the program, securing NOK 1 million.

Underwater climate forests

Trefadder launches Norway’s first underwater climate forest through its kelp forest restoration projects.

Scaled production

Together with our investors, Innovation Norway and DNB, Trefadder invested in a significant increase in production capacity to remove even more CO₂ from the atmosphere. In 2023, production nearly doubled.

Commercial breakthrough

Trefadder supports businesses with carbon offsetting and delivers annual CO₂ removal equivalent to 100,000 tonnes. This represents a significant commercial breakthrough, elevating our production to a high international level.

1,000,000 Trees planted

Five years after launch, Trefadder plants the one millionth tree, reaching the original goal - with an increased ambition to do much more!

"Walk for Trees"

On March 21st, Trefadder launches “Walk for Trees”, a mobile app allowing everyone to plant trees through their everyday activities.

Expanding marine initiatives

Trefadder launches Sea Habitats, introducing artificial reefs in order to increase marine biodiversity. Additionally, Trefadder initiates Norway’s largest commercial kelp restoration project.

Launch of old-growth forest protection

In collaboration with landowners, Trefadder preserves these rare forest ecosystems, safeguarding biodiversity and securing value for landowners.

CLIMATE FORESTS

Caring for nature,
the long-term way

Trefadder's commercial climate forests originate from an extensive government-led climate forest initiative run by the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment (2013–2019).

The Norwegian Environment Agency, together with leading forestry research institutions, has invested more than NOK 50 million in Norwegian climate forest research between 2015 and 2021.

The climate impact of Norwegian climate forests is well documented, and Trefadder has, in collaboration with international partners, further developed climate forest methodologies, practices, and documentation.

DOCUMENTATION

Trefadder’s approach is grounded in research

The Norwegian Environment Agency has estimated that Norway can establish climate forests with a carbon capture potential of 447 million tonnes. Norway’s annual emissions are approximately 49 million tonnes of CO₂.

Norway therefore has strong potential for climate forests, particularly along the western coast, where there is available land and where the albedo effect has less impact.

Building on this research, Trefadder has developed a commercial methodology for the production and documentation of climate forests in collaboration with KPMG Canada. KPMG Canada has for several years been a leading provider of certification and verification of climate forests both within and outside Canada.
